Wine review: Twisted Old Vine Zinfandel is medium-bodied with aromas of black cherry, red currant, blackberry bramble and a hint of spice. Concentrated ripe fruit, dark berry flavors and black pepper carry through to the palate while nicely balanced acidity and plush tannins lead to a lingering finish. Enjoy Twisted Old Vine Zinfandel with braised short ribs, BBQ chicken pizza or pulled pork sliders.
My review: For the money, the wine satisfies, but I wouldn't rate it very high in general. Though Twisted's label boasts 30 gold medals and 6 Best Buys since 2007 in Wine Enthusiast, I'm not joining in on the hype. A medium body, I sensed blackberry, black cherry, and earth on the nose, accompanied with a jammy palate exposing nutmeg and plum nuances. Slightly dusty, slightly bitter. Not the best standalone wine, but did pair well with deep chocolate brownies. I used the rest of the wine to make mulled wine, heating the wine and steeping mulling spices. This brought out more bitterness, but was overall more enjoyable.
